Being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis changed Gina Llewellyn's life.
Her daily activities became restricted by the disease, and she eventually lost sight in one eye.

But when it comes to creating awareness and raising money for MS, the disease hasn't done much to stop her. For each of the five years since she was diagnosed, Llewellyn has participated in the MS Walk to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

"As soon as I was diagnosed, I got pretty passionate about (the walk)," said Llewellyn, 42, of Allegheny Township. "I decided I wanted to try and help people.

"If there's not going to be a cure for myself, I would like to see one for the future -- for my children, my children's children and other people's children."

Friends and family have joined her on the walk in the past, raising as much as $1,800. But her ambitions this year are bigger.

She wants her team to be mentioned in the National MS Society newsletter as one of the teams raising the most money at the April 23 walks that will be held across the country.

She said she's touched that Jeff Revilla, owner of Blank Skate Supply in Natrona, is hosting a Skate for the Cure charity event at his store on her behalf.

All the money Revilla raises will be donated to her team.

"I've only met Jeff twice," Llewellyn said. "For him to open up his heart like this is just so meaningful."

Revilla said his wife, Jessica, rides horses with Llewellyn and her 15-year-old daughter, Lynall. When Llewellyn's MS symptoms forced her to quit riding with Lynall, Jessica offered to take the Kiski Area High School freshman riding, another gesture Llewellyn said she appreciated.

And now, with Revilla's help, she's hoping to raise much more than she ever has for National MS Society and ultimately, for the people who are affected by the illness.

"This disease is so unpredictable," Llewellyn said. "It affects so many people in so many different ways that I hope one day there will be a cure.

"It's hard, but I try to keep a smile on my face and keep trucking along."

Revilla said he hopes Skate for the Cure will raise about $2,000 for MS. He's expecting 60 to 80 kids to attend, paying the $10 admission, and buying food and drinks. On a typical spring Friday, Revilla said only about 10 to 15 skaters come to the indoor skate park.

The charity event is Blank Skate's first in five years of existence. Revilla said he wanted to sponsor an event when his wife suggested Llewellyn's walk team.

"It came together at the same time," Revilla said. "I wanted to do a charity event, and within an hour my wife called and said, 'Would you be interested in doing a charity event for MS?'"

Revilla's offering door prizes such as skateboard decks, wheels, and grip tape donated by his suppliers, and six-month skate passes for the store.

He's received strong local support as well, with Daily Juice donating Huggies, Myers Print Shop printing the flyers, Giant Eagle donating hot dogs and Wilder's Accounting giving money for refreshments.

Through an online message board, Revilla is also receiving strong support.

Revilla said skaters around the country interact on a message board his company sponsors, and the event was publicized there.

A 13-year-old skater from New Jersey sent a $20 bill wrapped in a paper to Revilla with a note saying he wishes he could attend.

Llewellyn said she doesn't know any of the skaters who'll be participating, and that's what makes it so special.

"So many people want to see the bad in kids," Llewellyn said. "This just proves that there are a whole lot of good kids with good hearts."
